TIMELINE

Bi-Weekly Publication from September 2019 - April 2020

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Mars' Hill is a student publication of Trinity Western University. Mars’ Hill seeks to be a professional and relevant student publication, reflecting and challenging the TWU community, while intentionally addressing local, national, and international issues.

As art director, my role was to direct a team of visual creatives to create content that would serve as an accompaniment to work created by the writing team.

THE PROBLEM

As a publication, the main focus of the product are the articles written by editorial team. The visuals exists to compliment the articles, but not distract from the reading experience.

THE GOAL

Use our position as the visual team to create visuals that open space for discussion, while simultaneously highlighting the theme of the issue and articles.

THE SOLUTION

Using a maximal minimalism approach, the entire publication only ever used one font, and each issue only contained one colour.

The minimalistic approach to colour and typeface choices allowed for the designs to be as expressive as we wanted.

This balance met our goal of communicating the theme of the article while not overpowering the reading experience.

THE IMPACT

On an end-of-year survey—which sampled a representative selection of the target audience—the visual content received a rating of 9.3/10. Out of all the survey sections, the visual section received the highest rating.

Bi-Weekly, we printed 1000 issues. The shelf would be empty by the time the next issue was published.
